A drunk driver backing out of a parking space hit two vehicles before continuing in reverse and slamming into the front of Enzo's Restaurant in the Village of Mamaroneck, according to police.
Police were notified of the incident around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, when responding officers arrived on scene and found a vehicle inside of the building/Enzo’s Restaurant. Officers immediately began rendering aid to multiple people on the scene, said Sgt. Sandra DiRuzza.
A total of nine victims were treated, four with critical injuries. Of the nine victims, three were transported to Westchester Medical Center, one victim was transported to Jacobi Medical Center, two victims were transported to Montefiore Hospital New Rochelle, two were transported to White Plains Hospital, and one victim was treated at the scene and refused further medical attention, DiRuzza said.
According to DiRuzza, it appears the driver, Roseanne Cassano, 79, of Yonkers, was backing out of a parking space near the location and hit two vehicles before continuing in reverse into the restaurant.
The accident caused Mamaroneck Avenue to be closed from Halstead Avenue to Spencer Place for more than five hours.
Four of the victims who remain in critical condition Monday afternoon include a 77-year-old woman from Corona; a 74-year-old man, also from Corona; an 81-year-old woman from Briarwood, and a 66-year-old woman from Somers, police said.
The Westchester County Department of Public Safety’s Accident Reconstruction Team was notified and responded to the location to conduct a further investigation.
